What should you do when a car accident leaves you unable to work?

Nobody expects to get into a car accident, but when it happens, it can throw your whole life out of whack. Whether you are severely injured and in the hospital or nursing bruised muscles back to health, the accident may make it difficult to work for a while. Missing work for any amount of time will have serious consequences, but when you are out of work for six weeks or more, it can be devastating.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans cumulatively spend over one million days per year in the hospital due to injuries from car accidents. Whether or not you are hospitalized, if you must take time away from work, you should be sure to do the following.

Follow doctor’s orders

It is absolutely imperative that you follow your doctor’s prescribed course of treatment following a car accident. Too many people make the mistake of neglecting medical orders and prolonging their recovery time considerably. If you want to get back to work as soon as possible, follow your medical providers’ directions closely and be sure to keep up with any follow-up appointments that are necessary, too.

Plan for the future

As you are recuperating from an injury, it can be easy to lose hope and get depressed. You are unable to work, there is likely considerable financial strain and you are dealing with the pain and inconvenience of your injury. Rather than succumbing to the stress of the situation, start planning for the future and your return to work. Staying optimistic may even help you heal faster.

Seek legal counsel

The financial impact of missing work should not be overlooked, and it is likely not the only monetary burden that will result from a car accident. You will also be dealing with medical bills and the cost of repairing or replacing your car. All of these expenses add up quickly, but consulting with an attorney can help you find the best option for dealing with these costs.
